Is buying a lift for disabled person a good idea?

If you are in doubts if you have enough funds to get a lift fitted in your home, you may be surprised how affordable some options may be, and benefits may go far beyond the costs, especially for people with limited mobility.

We can assure you that wide range of models and types we recommend, as well as high level of customisation, allow to find the perfect lift for you and your home style. What is more, installation of some lifts requires very limited building work, with no need for any permissions – but it undoubtedly adds huge value to any house, in financial but also non-financial terms. Getting a wheelchair upstairs will not be a problem anymore. You will forget the pain of going up and down the stairs. You will finally enjoy the whole area of you home, not only one floor.

Which lift to choose?

There are so many types of lifts allowing people with limited mobility to get up and down that you will definitely find the one which meets your needs. Please let us to present you few questions which allow you to realise what should be considered when choosing the right lift for you.

  1. Your budget and grants available
  2. Do you consider indoor or outdoor lift?
  3. Do the lift users mind enclosed spaces?
  4. How much space can you sacrifice for the lift and the access to it?
  5. Structural changes required and constraints of the building
  6. Can you manage the controls or remote controls should be considered? Us it to be controlled from inside or outside?
  7. Should the carer be transferred together with the wheelchair user?
  8. Where the lift is supposed to be installed? (in the room or on stairs)
  9. How do the door open? Is it easy to use for the wheelchair user?
  10. Safety features. The most important and popular ones are: emergency lowering or stopping and battery back-up system, an alarm or telephone, an overspeed governor, an automatic door locking mechanism, an on/off key switch, a smoke detector, a lockable door (for example for children), sensors which allow to detect the objects below and block the lift.

Lift types which you may consider are as follows:

OUR LIFTS

Step Lifts

If you or your loved one is a wheelchair user and there are only few steps which makes the life difficult, we recommend installing a step lift. Step lifts (or vertical low rise lifting platform) are open platforms with a limited rise (usually around 1 metre) which allow people with physical difficulties to travel few steps up and down. They may be installed on stairs or next to them to allow lifting up the wheelchair user. There is usually no need for structural alterations.

Incline Step Lifts

Incline Step Lifts are the kind of platform designed specifically to enable wheelchair users travelling up and down the stairs. The big advantage is that, unlike stairlifts, they do not require the wheelchair user to be moved between wheelchair and chair.

The biggest benefit when compared with other lifts travelling between floors is space saving. When not in use, the platform may be easily folded up. What is more, incline platform lift does not require any additional space to place the lift as it is installed on the already existing stairs. It does not require any structural changes and is therefore the cheapest construction which enable wheelchair user to travel between floors with no moving away from the wheelchair. It must be however considered that the stairs need to be wide enough to be able to use the platform.

Through Floor Lifts

Through floor lift travels through the aperture in the ceiling/floor in order to get to the upper/lower floor. When you are downstairs, the lift can be moved quietly and discreetly back upstairs, leaving the whole space free from obstruction. It has therefore minimal impact on the home living area which makes it ideal for domestic use, even in homes with not huge amount of space. It is also quite easy to reinstall in another property if you move home.

The huge advantage of through floor lift is space saving and in the same time having very modern and highly customisable look. What is more, through floor lifts need less structural alterations than lifts or platforms which makes them more affordable. In the same time they are more convenient than stairlifts as there is no need for the wheelchair user to be moved from the wheelchair into the chair.

It is recommended that the size of the lift should be around 1m wide x 1.5m long however there are also more space saving options available. The cost of the lift depends highly on specific features and customisation. The installation is quite quickly, taking usually around 2 days, as there is no need for a pit.

Platform Lifts

This kind of lift may be put in the middle between space saving of a through floor lift and the longevity of a traditional lift. Platform lift does include a shaft but it differs from the standard lift as only the platform and not the whole cabin travels up and down. Its main advantage when compared with the passenger lift is that it requires less structural changes and there are usually no contraindications to get it installed in almost every home as only a pit of around 7.5cm is required.

If you are positive you prefer the lift with a shaft, platform lift is recommended for homes with more limited space. It is also good solution for lower number of passengers (the maximum capacity is usually around 400 kg) and shorter distances, therefore may be good choice for private property. It is also cheaper than proper passenger lifts but more expensive than through floor lift.

Standard Passenger Lifts

The main difference between the standard lift and platform lift is that in case of a lift, the whole cabin is going up, not only the platform. Just like with platform lifts, installation requires a shaft to be built as well as winding mechanism. Lift is mostly recommended when it will be the main mean of travelling between floors. It’s less likely to get it installed in private house as it requires more space and severe structural changes.

Standard passenger lift is the largest construction from all above and it may not be even possible to get it installed in every building due to some constraints and requirements, as for example deep pit of around 1m. Structural changes also entail higher costs. On the other hand, it is most long-lived (it may last around 20 years), has higher speed and capacity (usually over 350 kg) and more stops may be added than in the platform. All of those makes it a construction which adds a lot of value and modernity to the building and is a perfect choice for big houses.
